Antigua has a rich history to be explored. Start in St. John's, where the Museum of Antigua & Barbuda is housed in the old Court House at the corner of Long and Market Streets. Built in 1750, it's the oldest building in Antigua. Exhibits explore Antigua's geological origins and political history, the culture of the Arawaks (with a life-sized house) and a model sugar plantation. The museum is also a good source of information on other historic sites which dot the island. Don't miss their small, interesting gift shop.
On Church Street is the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Divine, which has been called "the most imposing of all Cathedrals in the West Indian Province". Stop at Redcliffe Quay, where beautifully restored 19th century buildings house shops and restaurants.
The local market in the south end of town at the junction of Valley and All Saints Roads is a riot of colorful fruits, vegetables and spices, and people haggling for them. Buy delicious pineapples - Antigua's are considered some of the world's best.
Outside of town at the entrance to St. John's Harbour is Fort St. James, built in 1706 to protect the busy port from pirates who raided it from neighboring islands like Guadeloupe.
To the south is English Harbour with Nelson's Dockyard, a favorite of visitors and of yachtsmen from around the world. It's the hub of activity for Antigua Race Week, world class yacht racing and fun. For a spectacular view of English Harbour, go right from the Dockyard to Shirley Heights.
Off the beaten path is Parham, on Parham Harbour in the north. Beautiful St. Peter's Church here dates from 1840 and is an octagonal Italianate structure. Those who spend the day exploring will be rewarded with a real sense of the beauty and history of the island.
