Mobile Market in El Salvador to Generate US$ 8.78 Billion in Revenue by 2014
Subscriber numbers will record a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.52% during the 2009 - 2014 period, achieving a penetration of 122.83%. Claro, Movistar and Tigo are betting on service bundling to increase revenues and customer retention.
Buenos Aires - March 17, 2009 - Signals Telecom Consulting, the leading telecommunications research and consulting firm for markets in Latin America and the Caribbean, announces the availability of its report entitled "Mobile Market Analysis: El Salvador". This report is one of a series of six studies on Central American mobile markets that analyze competitive dynamics, regulatory framework, operator strategy and growth forecasts for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.
High mobile telephone penetration rates are forcing operators to diversify their service portfolio to strengthen their competitive position in the market. "The launch of UMTS/HSPA by Claro and Tigo will force the other three operators to define their mobile Internet strategies. In the case of Movistar, we do not expect any surprises, because this operator will opt to sell UMTS/HSPA services. The situation of operator RED is more complex, because of the lack of any route for migration from iDEN to 3G services. Lastly, we expect Digicel to opt to join the rest of the market, launching a UMTS/HSPA network to the detriment of WiMAX," stated Elias Vicente, Signals Telecom Consulting analyst and principal author of the series of reports on Central America.
Interest in expansion of Pay TV services (Claro and Tigo/Amnet) will force other market players to speed up the launch of new services and promotions that will allow them to increase their customer retention rates. "Movistar's strategy in Central America is quite clear: to launch video services, commercialize UMTS/HSPA and try to position itself as a broadband provider. For this reason, we cannot rule out the possibility of an IPTV launch by Movistar El Salvador," concluded Vi cente.
