The Cayman Islands: Shopping & Things To Do
The area code for all phone numbers is 345.
In Grand Cayman you never have to go far to shop. In addition to the shops in town, the many small malls on West Bay Road convenient to most hotels have fast food, liquor and gift shops.
Since Cayman is a diver's dream, you'll find many shops catering to their needs. Diver's Supply has a vast supply of diving and snorkeling gear along with beachwear and sunglasses.
In town visit Artifacts for a wide variety of antiques, salvaged coins, handcrafted jewelry, maps and prints. Caymania Freeport, one of the island's oldest duty-free stores, carries cosmetics and perfumes as well as gemstones and coins. The Jewelry Center has six sections under one roof. Here you'll find loose stones plus designer jewelry collections. Churchill's Cigar offers a choice of fine cigars, including Cuban, which, incidentally, cannot be brought into the States. While in George Town don't miss the Cayman Islands National Museum, built in 1833, with its small gift shop in what was once the jail-an interesting place to visit for the natural and cultural history of the islands.
Before stepping out for the evening make an appointment with Virginia's Beauty Centre (George Town Map D-4) at 949-2025, a multi-ethnic unisex hair and nail salon for all the family.
For serious duty-free shopping, visit Kirk Freeport for fine jewelry, the best Swiss watches, bone china and crystal such as Lalique, Baccarat and Royal Doulton. At the Galleria Plaza you'll find Tropical Trader, Duty Free Ltd. and De Bag Man for a wide variety of duty-free items.
Just south of George Town is Pure Art Gallery & Gifts located in a delightful cottage and also in the Hyatt Regency Hotel for original paintings and prints by our cover artist, Debbie Chase-van der Bol. She also carries artwork and crafts by many local artists including rugs, wallhangings, sculpture and "useable art" such as place mats, mouse pads and cutting boards. Also outside George Town through Prospect, visit the Stingray Brewery and Gift Shop for a brewery tour and souvenir items.
On North Sound Road is Tortuga Rum Company with its world-famous rum cake, packed and ready to take with you or ship as gifts and souvenirs.
