Anguilla Restaurant & Dining Reviews Reviews
Straw Hat 06/09/2004
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
Once again the Straw Hat lived up to our expectations – it continues to be one of our favorite restaurants on the island. It was the only one that we chose to make a repeat visit to this year, changing our plans at the last minute so that we could go back a second time before we left.
First, there is the truly incredible setting. Set out on the water looking out to the skyline of St. Martin, the view is incomparable and incredibly romantic. In our opinion, the view alone makes it worth going to the Straw Hat for dinner. However, the food is equally deserving of compliments.
Both times we had the lobster and crayfish spring rolls and the field green salad as starters - both were excellent. The first time I had the Baby Osso Bucco; although I felt guilty not ordering seafood, it was outstanding. Extremely tender and somewhat spicy, it was some of the best Osso Bucco I have had. The second time I had a grouper/snapper/crayfish special - glad I had a chance to try Straw Hat's crayfish which everyone seems to love (now I know why). My wife had the grouper both times as she loved it so much the first time. Of course, when it came to desert, my wife had to have the delicious caramelized bananas - perfect bananas topped with crispy broiled caramelized sugar served with vanilla ice cream. My wife looks forward to this particular desert every year (hope they never take it off the menu); even I, not really a banana lover, have to admit that the desert is one of the best ever.
Finally, there is Peter and his staff who do a great job. Peter is a great host and all the staff are attentive and friendly – importantly they actually appear to be having fun which adds to the unique atmosphere of the restaurant.
