Barbados Restaurant & Dining Reviews
The Cliff 02/17/2003
Reviewers Rating: Great
The Cliff has, hands down, the most spectacular setting of any restaurant I have ever been to. It has several levels and outdoor terraces, but when you make your reservation you must make sure that you are on the lowest level, closest to the water. The water below is luminescent and you can watch the sea creatures swim to and fro while you dine. (I saw a huge sea turtle slowly make the circuit, and later there was a large sting ray floating by.) The patio is covered overhead by a retractable canvas awning, so even if it rains you can still dine in comfort. In addition to candles on each table, there are large torchieres with open flames to illuminate the setting and infuse it with romance.
The service at the Cliff is impeccable, from the sommelier down to the waterboy. Each waitstaff member is courteous and attentive, and no sooner did I wish I had another cocktail, or some fresh bread, did it appear. Indeed, the service here puts to rest the notion that the Caribbean can not produce first-class service.
What keeps me from giving The Cliff a 4-star rating, however, is my disappointment in the food. The selection was commendable, the presentation of it was lovely, but I'm afraid the taste was a little bland. It tasted as if the chef were reluctant to use any herbs or spices in the dishes. The food was certainly good, I don't mean to imply otherwise. It certainly surpassed Caribbean standards of cuisine. But it was, quite simply, outclassed by the sublime setting and service.
So even though my partner's and my dinner has passed beyond our memory, we still recall fondly the romance of the evening. For a beautiful and intimate setting, the Cliff is definitely unforgettable.
