Restaurant Reviews: St. Martin/St. Maarten
L'Escalade 06/15/01
Reviewers Rating: Good
Located in Grand Case, this French seafood restaurant came highly recommended by a local. We tried it and must say that we were completely disappointed. The service was the worst I have ever had. The food was good though. We arrived at 7:45 p.m. The hostess advised us it would be a 20 minute wait. One hour later we were still waiting for a seat. There was only five tables sat on only one waitress working. We finally did get a table overlooking the water (which was beautiful) around 9:00 p.m. They quit serving dinner around 10:00 p.m. I believe. One in the group ordered escargot and some horrible crab-carrot cake abomination. I had a seafood pasta dish that contained a little bit of everything and was quite good. Another in our group ordered standard american fare and said ti was tastey. We also ordered a couple of appetizers. Our waitress rarely came back to our table and it took 30 minutes to get the appetizers - which were very good. Our dinner arrived about an hour after we ordered it. It was served hot and everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. I was horrified that it took 3 hours to eat dinner though. We did not arrive back in Maho until 11:30 p.m. The food was good though. The service was incredibly slow and unattentive. If you don't mind watching the water, having cocktails and leisurely enjoying your meal, it may be worth a try. If you want to get in and out under 2 hours, forget about it!
