St. Martin/St. Maarten Restaurant & Dining
Mario's Bistro 01/27/2003
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
We went to Mario's Bistro (owned by Mario, his wife Martyne, and Didier) on Wednesday (8 Jan). They still have two seatings (especially if you want to be on the water), so we went late and it was not packed, making for an extremely pleasant evening. We ordered a bottle of Joseph Drouhin's 98 Pommard to accompany our asparagus with pancetta and a hint of St Marcelin cheese in a balsamic and truffle oil drizzle. There was plenty of wine left for our lamb shank and flank steak. The lamb is a standard dish in a red wine sauce with potatoes, leeks, and sun-dried tomatoes. The flank steak came with small potatoes sliced and immersed in cream with smoky bacon and a hint of cheese. Coffees and XO Armagnac closed out the evening as we watched a dozen needlefish scoot along the surface of the canal. The food came to less than $100 and there was so much left over that we had dinner (not lunch) the next evening. Didier explained to the next table that Mario was a big man (quite true), so he served ample portions. The wine was a bit of a celebration at about $60 and the armagnac was over the top, but you can't beat a restaurant where the chef is an owner and the other two owners are in the dining room, especially when that dining room is on the water. No website, but their phone is 011 590 590 87 06 36.
