Antigua Shopping:
Shopping, sightseeing, beaching and watersports are just a few of the fantastic things to do on Antigua and Barbuda.
St. John's, the capital of Antigua, is the center of island activity, boasting a multitude of interesting sites, fabulous tastes and alluring buys. Visit Caribbean Gems at 462-3670 (1. St. John's Map D-4). This shop specializes in jewelry and brand-name watches at duty-free prices. Near the Harbour on Redcliffe Street find Noreen Phillips Coutere at 462-3127 (2. St. John's Map E-4), where one-of-a-kind garments are custom fit in 2 hours. Browse through the racks and choose from the beautiful fabrics from Italy and India fashioned into casual and elegant day or evening ware. A nice selection of accessories is also available.
Also not to be missed is Nelson's Dockyard National Park (Antigua Map L-8) at English Harbour, which offers restaurants, a pharmacy, liquor store, supermarket, galleries, a museum and many marine-related retail and service businesses. Overlooking the dockyard and harbour is an amazing scenic vista at Shirley Heights (Antigua Map L-9). Used by the British as a lookout for marauding French and Dutch ships in the 1800s, it now offers souvenirs and a bar with merrymaking, especially on Sundays, with food, drink and festive Reggae music.
East of English Harbour and north of Freetown, you'll find Harmony Hall (Antigua Map I-12). This historic sugar plantation is the center of the art community, with local artists and craftspeople displaying their creations.
Barbuda Shopping:
There are several shops that sell groceries and fresh food. All supplies come by boat or by plane from various places via Antigua. The best time to look for fruit and vegetables is when the boat comes in on Friday or Saturday. Many people sell their own produce at different times throughout the year and this is when the best organically grown produce is available.
Fish is brought in at the Lagoon wharf nearly every day in good weather. Locally produced meat is often for sale from a table on the street, there are no butchers, it helps to remember those posters in the butchers showing where sirloin steak is on an animal before you buy!
There are several variety stores selling all kinds of essential household items and clothes, many of them have gifts and T Shirts.
There is a small craft centre where local handicrafts are for sale to visitors and an ArtCafe (email the ArtCafe at ArtCafe@candw.ag) where visitors are welcome to read information about the island, buy a map or seek advice. This is the home of the artist, Claire Frank, who specialises in hand painted silk pictures and cards.
