Beaches Varadero 10/17/2003

My wife and I recently returned from Beaches Varadero and were extremely dissapointed. We went there for our anniversary and it was ruined by the atrocious food. We still managed to enjoy ourselves on the beautiful beach and off the resort but we both found nothing to eat there. The smell of the buffet was turning my stomach by the third day. I have stayed at 4 other resorts in Cuba and have never had this problem. We lived on cucumbers and bread the entire week - there was not even any fruit to speak of. The a la carte restaurants were the most dissapointing - they simply carried the disgusting food off the buffet to the a la cartes. The seafood was like nothing I have ever seen - black fish, nothing had been cleaned - shrimp still had faces, tentacles, etc. and bones throughout the tough fish.
I cannot believe a 4 and a half star resort would expect their guests to eat food like this, it was insulting.
Cuba is a great place and the people are fantastic but be wise when choosing your resort - the ratings do not always reflect the quality of the hotel.
