cuba hotel & resort reviews

Superclubs Breezes Costa Verde 12/16/2003
Reviewers Rating: Good
Just back from a relaxing week at the SBCV. First couple of days were a bit cloudy due to the effects of Tropical Storm Odette. After that it was sunny and hot. Anything is better than the cold and snow of Toronto. Anyways, the resort is very well laid out. The accomodations are good the way they are set with about 8 units per building. Although we didn't have any problems with the safe, I am not enamored with the way they are operated (sliding your room key to open and close), possibility of anyone accessing the contents as long as they have a key card to open your door. Would much prefer a combination touch pad lock. This resort has an official no tipping policy, but that didn't stop us or anyone else from giving the hard working staff some gratuities. This is not the case with all the staff, but I did find the service picked up a bit and friendliness increased if a tip was offered. Be careful with open offering of tips though, because staff have been fired if caught taking tips. The old handshake technique seemed to work well for us. One staff member that deserves high praise was Edi (waiter at the Cuban restaurant), an amazing waiter and person. Super friendly. Certainly made our meals at the Cuban restaurant a joy. The food at the buffet was questionable. Not much variation for dinners at all even though there was suppose to be a theme each night. And at times it seemed things were reheated from the day before for breakfast, lunch , or dinner. Lots of people raved about Lucy's restaurant by the pool on the forum, but we found the food to be subpar and also I didn't go to Cuba to eat burgers, and hotdogs. Previous experience in Cuba was at the Melia Cayo Coco. They had a much better buffet and for lunch you could eat at the Beach Grill which had a far superior selection. SBCV should have put a beach grill on their property. The ala cartes were very good at SBCV. Japanese was very tasty and entertaining, but the Cuban was our favourite because of the food and Edi. The Italian was nice. All the waitresses seemed to be running around for no apparent reason, because it wasn't really busy when we were there.
Another disappointment with SBCV was the entertainment staff or lack there of. For such a large resort I would thought they would have a better organized activities program. Very seldom was anything actually organized even though it was advertised on the activities board. Hardly saw any entertainment staff and those that we did see weren't the friendliest(with a few exceptions). Again comparing with Melia Cayo Coco, the staff there were amazing. Got to know all of them within days and they were friendly and organized with their activities. Will probably get roasted by some for this but we did take a side trip to swim with the dolphins. What an amazing experience. Highly recommended. I do not believe in cruelty to animals and some would view this as such, but whether we support it or not, wherever there is tourism you will have these programs and we might as well ensure that they get the financial support to provide the facilities for these beautiful creatures. But to each their own. All in all it was a good vacation with a few hiccups. We will probably not go back to this resort just because it wasn't as nice an experience as we had at the Melia Cayo Coco, and also because there are some many others we would like to visit too. Hope this was informative and not too long winded.
