Spanish Bay Reef… a wonderful family vacation! We traveled to Spanish Bay Reef the week of July 27, 2002 and had the time of our lives. To quote my kids... "This trip was even more fun than the Disney Cruise."
This was a family vacation that included our 6-year old daughter and 9-year old son. A key to the success of this trip was the fact that we usually planned an event during the day that let us explore the island. The exchange privilege with “The Beach Club Colony/ was a wonderful way to explore 7-mile beach. It’s like staying at two resorts for the price of one. We also took advantage of the infamous Spanish Bay rental jeeps and took several 1/2-day excursions to either points of interest or other beaches on the island. These jeeps have a lot of "character" and once I remembered how to work a stick shift, and the fact that the drivers seat is on the "passenger side" of the car and you’re also shifting with your left hand, these drives were a blast!
The resort itself is wonderful! We thoroughly enjoyed the fact that it was a secluded beach and could easy see the kids on the beach as they collected hermit crabs, etc (since the only people on the beach are also staying at Spanish Bay). In a previous review, someone noted that a group of kids and pre-teens would usually organize their own fun. Our kids were ecstatic to be apart of this group and met kids not only from different parts of the USA but also several from Europe. The kids really enjoyed each other’s company and played football on the beach, hung out in the hot tub, or played different games in the pool. The beach itself does have a lot of jagged rocks, etc. but it’s nothing that a good pair of water sox can’t handle. Plus the rock wall was quite manageable and once at the end-point, there was plenty of area to swim or jump off the rocks into the water.
If you find yourself either hungry or thirsty while at Spanish Bay, then there’s something wrong with you. The food is quite good and there’s plenty of it! The drinks were also plentiful and very refreshing. The staff was very friendly and really worked their tails off… especially since it’s an all-inclusive bar and therefore people tend to drink like fish. If you ever needed anything, all you need do is ask. I agree that this location is definitely a divers paradise, but we also found it to be extremely family friendly. We can’t wait to go back!
