Antigua & Barbuda
Jolly Harbour Resort 08/09/01
Reviewers Rating: Fair
Stay somewhere else and GO somewhere else. We stayed at the Jolly Harbour for a week this past Spring, and we won't be going back to this resort OR to this island. We exchanged our timeshare for a week here. The room appeared nic at first. Then we found that the refrigerator leaked; there were blood stains on the linens in the second bedroom (which the maid never did change); and the water pressure in the shower was lacking. The resort is so spread out that you either have to walk yourself to death in the swealtering heat or you have to rent a golf cart for the week at a rip off price of $150.00. The restaraunts at the resort are very overpriced, especially the one right on the beach. The Italian Restaurant there does have some great pasta and tuna pizza, and the lady who runs it is very sweet. There are only a few grass tiki huts on the beach for shade, and white, plastic, broken, lounge chairs, which were totally filthy to lie in! The activities at the resort are slim to none, with the one exception to that being a complimentary manager's cocktail sunset cruise, which was great! If you ask for an oceanfront room, you will get a room that faces the ocean, but is NOT on the beachfront. There are concreate boat canals that run between each row of villas and that separates you from the beach also. If you take a hike down the bike/running path on the beach, and up the hill at the end, you get some great sunset views. Never saw the green flash though! The Jolly Beach all-inclusive resort is right next door, and it puts this place to shame. The people of Antigua were not the friendliest we have encountered, and the island is not very pretty; the shopping is terrible; and the litter is bad. We did arrange for an island tour with one of the locals hanging out at the beach, for $40 a piece (4 people) for the day (and I mean, the ENTIRE Day!) It was one of the best deals of the trip. I'm glad I went to Antigua once, but I did not like it enough to go back.
