Hotel & Resort Reviews:
Antigua & Barbuda
Sandals 07/03/02
Reviewers Rating: Fair
Unfortunately, the Sandals Antigua property was a huge let down. When we arrived, we expected a beautiful room, great service, and great food; none of which we received. Our room was in desperate need of a paint job, there was mold in the bathtub, the windows wouldn't close, the air conditioning was pathetic, and the room looked dirty. When the luggage guy left the room, my wife was holding back her tears, pretending to be happy. We kept hope alive and counted on the rest of the facilities to make up for the room, so we went to the central area for some food. The snack bar was the only thing open, which was ok, but the cooks never smiled and pretty much threw your food at you when it was ready. We went to the bar to get some water and were greeted with a finger pointed at a coke machine with some glasses next to it (the bartender never even looked up at us). Determined to find something to get excited about, we went over to the spa. The 'roman tubs' were dirty and full of leaves and the spa consisted of a rusted tub, a massage room, and little locker rooms. We went to see the manager, Winston Anderson, and I pretty much told him that we wanted to leave immediately because this was not what we expected. Winston was very responsive to our dissatisfaction, assuring us that the resort would grow on us. He let us choose a new room, which was nothing spectacular but better than the motel8-type room we had before. I pointed out the fact that there was rust everywhere and mildew coming through the paint, but I thought maybe I was being to picky. The staff moved our luggage to our new room and threw our robes on the floor...it seemed as if we were not liked. Desperate for something to enjoy, we went to a nicely laid out dinner on the beach. On our way back to our room we were harassed by a local, begging for us to bring him some of the food or buy some "doobies" from him. We went to bed and hoped for a better day. The next morning we woke up late I didn't sleep well with the air conditioner blowing directly on me all night) and went to a buffet-style breakfast.. The grapes I chose were half rotted. We went back to the room to shower and there were ants crawling all over our towels. I had enough, I couldn't believe I was paying $600 a day to stay there. Gretchen was just as uncomfortable as I was. Our honeymoon at Sandals Antigua was a nightmare and we paid an $200 airline charge to get out of there as soon as we could, at 4am the next morning.
