Antigua & Barbuda Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
Hawksbill 01/25/2003
Reviewers Rating: Great
My partner and I were a little wary about going to the Hawksbill after reading a few negative reviews (we had bid and won and auction for our trip to the hotel.) Well, our fears were laid to rest as soon as we arrived.

The aspect that has earned it the greatest negative responses was something my partner and I loved---the laid-back atmosphere and quiet seclusion. It definitely is not a place to stay if you want evening entertainment or nightlife of any sort, as it is completely remote and a $40 roundtrip taxi ride away from the island nightlife. But for us it was perfect--and since we were traveling in November before the high season got started, we had the large resort almost to ourselves.

As for the food, it was above average for the Caribbean. Pretty good, always solid, but nothing gourmet. Both the a la carte menu and the buffet were reasonably priced and there was a good wine list with selections that wouldn't stretch our pocketbooks. I highly recommend any of the flambe desserts--the wait staff make a big, fun production out of it all and their dexterity with the flames is sure to impress. Breakfast and dinner are served in the same terraced restaurant with lovely views. Women: I recommend putting some bug spray on your legs and ankles if they are exposed, as the evening does bring a few mosquitos. Men shouldn't have a problem as long pants are required in the restuarant. Lunch is served on a patio nearer the beach, but we never ate there as we breakfasted so late in the day.

The beaches themselves are probably the best aspect of Hawksbill. There are four on the property, the clothing optional one being a short hike from most of the facilities. They were beautiful and nearly deserted. The most crowded one had only 3 other couples on it for the long weekend we were there.

Contrary to other reviews, we found the staff courteous, friendly, and quite willing to go out of their way to accommodate some of our special requests. I think, perhaps, that many Antiguans and other Caribbean nationals tend to treat guests the way that guests treat them. If guests treat them rudely, with expectations to be waited on hand and foot, they respond in kind. A quick smile and genuine warmth and interest on the guests' part can work wonders.

All in all, the Hawksbill was a great value for our money. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a laidback vacation in a lovely and secluded setting at a good price.
