Antigua & Barbuda Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews Reviews
Royal Antiguan Resort 01/15/2005
Reviewers Rating: Great
Clean, comfortable, economy hotel with the BEST beach and views in Antigua. Coco Bay has the second best beach but you pay 3 times as much. We booked our trip on a tight budget but ended up spending on fine dining and went to other hotels for day trips. RA beach is great and we liked it much better than Jolly Beach! The first night and the arrival was not so pleasant and we almost considered changing hotels on arrival. It was not just RA but the whole island at arrival feels very organic and rundown, but it all gets AMAZING when you wake up the next day in paradise! RA does feel a bit dated and plastic but you grow to like it fast to the point that you almost never want to leave! Remember that after all this is an economy choice and it is an excellent deal and a perfect get away to warm up your bones and unwind. If you care about decent food do not get the all inclusive option. The food on the Island is very pricy and for the most part is horrible! The food in the hotel is bad (O.K. if you're a Brit!). There are a few perfect restaurants, Chez Pascal 1 mile away from RA is pricy but is a world class excellent French cuisine with an elegant cozy ambiance and breath taking views and a pool. We ate there a few nights. Excellent service! Don’t miss Coco Bay's HOTEL restaurant (not Coco’s restaurant which is just next door which is nothing special!) Coco Bay is a good 30 minute drive from RA but is an amazing beach and the food is fantastic. Given that even bad food on the island is very pricy you might as well spend a little more and enjoy a great meal! Don't expect a fake smiley American style service anywhere in Antigua and especially not in RA. Antiguans seem to be a very proud bunch with a bit on an attitude which you will grow to appreciate in time! At first they do not appear friendly or helpful, but once they get to know you which takes about 30 hours of uncomfortable interactions your good bye could include hugs and teary eyes! Basically you need to do some major ass kissing and be VERY polite... they love that! If you are pissy you will get nowhere! So you kinda need to earn their friendship before you can expect a friendly service. Antigua is still much better than the USVI where there is no hope for quality of service! The hotel is lively but there is enough space for young couples, married with children, and older travelers to relax and enjoy in harmony. There were even a couple of gay couples living in peace! The guests are a good mix of mostly English, Americans (of all kind), and yes Canadians too! A fun and festive hotel which allows you to relax as the party ends rather early and is all confined to the lobby. For best experience make sure to rent a car early on, it's worth every penny. Go to the English Harbor and try the restaurants there too. Some are great for lunch or early evening dinner. Without a car you will feel trapped so don’t wait a day to rent one. You will use it but it is not as cheap as in the US so be prepared to drop another $300 or so for the week. A sedan with a right side wheel is recommended. There are NO road signs but you will manage just fine after the first day. The only sign we saw was for Chez Pascal, and it did help! The glitzy hotels are fine to check out but are mostly boring, empty, and have very uptight guests(yeah, your typical executives types that look like they made it big in Ohio and talk like they are still behind their desks!) Jolly Beach is like the board walk in NJ and has no character with a very ugly beach. I am sure the rooms are fine there but nothing else! All the glitzy hotels have totally average beaches compared to RA but most have better bars. RA drinks suck unless you are happy with a beer. Being an all inclusive hotel they only carry cheap, no name, drinks and are clue less about mixes. Again the exception is Coco Bay which while pricy is chilled and has a perfect beach. RA beach still has the BEST view and the beach is as good if not better. Unless you want to spend a lot of time in the room, no need to spend on an ocean view room. You need to spend it on car, fun, and food. The mountain side is just fine since you will be spending most of the day on the beach anyway. The goats sing on both sides but it is fun to listen to them moan! The pool is there but is not very inviting, I dipped only a few times very early in the morning. All and all a great hotel and an excellent destination. If you need any more tips send me an e-mail and enjoy your trip!
