Hotel Reviews: Barbados
Tropical Escape, St James 01/26/01
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
We had a great time at the Tropical Escape! The rooms are not huge, but have programmable air conditioning and a fan, and are modern and colourfully furnished. The food was excellent. There is table d'hote dining three times a week, where you choose your 3 course meal from a menu of three or four items per course, including a vegetarian selection. The food is beautifully presented. Four times a week (every other day) there is a buffet, which, whilst not as good as the table d'hote evenings is still very good, and fresh. There is always a large selection of cakes for dessert, and the house wine is free-flowing throughout your meal. After dinner, there is not much to do in the evenings, however the hotel has live entertainment in the bar most nights, which we found to be enjoyable. The barman's cocktails are excellent and we'd certainly recommend the "Cherry Blossom"!

The main drawback to the hotel is that you have to cross the quite busy west coast road to get to the beach, and then, unless you walk along the road a bit, you have to walk through a beach bar, which we found uncomfortable. Saying that, it is worth it, as in our opinion, the beach here was the best on the island!

With regards sports facilities, the hotel has snorkelling equipment you can take to the beach, and on the beach there is a hobie cat and some canoes, and also some sunbeds. These are for the hotel guests, but you have to find the right person to ask to use them. There is also a towel service whereby you can swap your towels in for clean ones whenever yours are dirty.

The island felt very safe to travel around and we walked four miles each way towards Bridgetown to visit the rum distillery, and it was well worth the trip. We would also highly recommend the jeep safari, a much better option than hiring a car, since the jeeps go through sugar cane plantations and the like, and other places where cars cannot reach.

The Tropical Escape is a small and friendly hotel. All the staff were helpful and friendly, as was everyone else on the beautiful island of Barbados. We would not hesitate to go back.
