Sam Lord's Castle 12/31/01

Have just returned from spending 7 days at Sam Lord's Castle, Barbados. After reading reviews at this site and others AFTER we booked the trip, we were a little worried to say the least. This is my family's first trip to the Caribbean and it was a spur of the moment decision since we usually spend Christmas in Florida.

We did not arrive at Sam Lord's until 9:30 Saturday evening. We were told we would have food available for us and that was correct, we were promptly served cold food left over from the buffet which had closed at 9:00 pm.

After eating as much as we could stomach, we went in search of our room.

Upon giving the room a quick tour we noticed the bathroom light didn't work. So back to the front desk I went. They offered us 1 of 2 rooms that were avalable. After seeing no difference between the 2 rooms, my 9 year old daughter and I settled on one. After moving we found the knob on the bathroom sink broken and the shower sprayed in every direction but towards the tub. So off I went again.

Took the 3rd room and went to bed.

We stayed in this room the duration of the trip.

Obviously not a great start. I will try toi sumarize the balance of the review

Rooms were poorly maintained but livable. A/C was poor in every room we sampled. Upgrade rooms are non-existent other than views.

Entertainment was poor and barely attended.

Food at the buffet was average. we were able to find something to eat most nights.

Grounds are tropical and well maintained. Site would be tremendous if management had some idea as to what travelers are looking for.

Hotel staff, for the most part, were courteous but did not have the tools to do their jobs properly. Maids were extremely nice.

Beach was nice (water rough) but was allowed to become run-down with decaying buildings and litter.

I did not intend to write a totally negative review and we did end up having a splendid time in the Barbados but we think of the time we could have had if the facilities were up to the standards they were when the hotel was run by Marriott.
