Barbados Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
Mango Bay 02/18/2003
Reviewers Rating: Great
On 2/13/03 we arrived home from 8 days in Barbados (just in time to catch a record-breaking 24"+ snowfall) ugh! Fortunately our lovely week at Mango Bay had rejuvenated our spirits and somehow we've maintained our good humor while plowing, shoveling and blowing snow for the past two days. We chose Mango Bay because of its small size, convenient location in Holetown, and in part, due to the recommendations posted on this Board.
Our 2nd floor oceanfront room was spacious, clean, and well-kept all during our stay. The beach was indeed small, but we didn't mind, and we had no problem getting loungers from our first day on.
The dining facilities are attractive, with a choice of inner or perimeter seating and I must mention the outstanding faux paintings of sky, rattan and mango trees painted on the interior walls & ceilings!
All the meals we were served were of outstanding quality and the presentation was impressive. And we particularly liked that very few lunches or dinners were buffet style. Being somewhat of a picky eater, I sometimes had trouble making a choice from the menu, but everything was delicious!
There was live musical entertainment each evening, but turned out quite differently than I had expected. There was a fellow who played steel drums and he was quite good, but his selections were more like "elevator music" than Caribbean tunes.
The only negatives that come to mind (and it's hard to find fault with sunny, 80-something degree weather in February) was the fact that unless you ASK FOR IT, your rum drinks are mixed with Jamaican rum -- which strikes me in a very odd way. However, once we were clued in by another American (who has stayed 2 weeks at Mango Bay every year for the last 10 years) that you have to ASK if you want some other brand of liquor! And the good stuff is not "top shelf" -- it's in the cabinet underneath the bar!
We were two of just a handful of American staying at Mango Bay, but having been to Barbados in 2000, it came as no surprise. We absolutely love the Brits and made quite a number of new friends during our stay.
We would most definitely stay at Mango Bay again...I'm already hoping that our finances will allow it next year!
