Occidental Allegro Papagayo Hotel All-Inclusive 03/21/2006 Reviewers Rating: Fair
This was our first trip to Costa Rica and the first night at Allegro Papagayo was far from what we had expected. The staff spoke minimal English, had no experience in service and had messed up several guest's reservations. Our arrival was too late to make reservations for dinner at either of the 2 restaurants on site, but the staff failed to inform us that there was a buffet served without reservations, so we went to bed HUNGRY! At this hotel, the rooms were sparsly furnished, only shampoo and soap in the bathrooms and no coffee (extra charge!!!). Nor were they able to cash a $50.00 travellers check - out of cash!!! We had reserved a room with King Size bed, but were given two Queens. Since we were only staying one night we did not fuss about it but SPECIFICALLY asked for a room with King bed for an additional two nights at the end of our trip, and was assured by the service manager that she would make sure we got a king bed and had reservations for dinners for the two nights stay at the end of our vacation. After travelling south, we returned to the hotel and alas - no king size bed, no dinner reservations and the manager argued with us, saying we messed up in our reservations (i.e. did not make them the right way). Anyway, after hours of arguing, they finally let us have a dinner reservation at one of the restaurants, event though the restaurant was supposedly fully booked. Surprise - when we get there - only half of the tables are seated, and only about another 2 or 3 parties arrived after us. Information about the services, trips, options was practically non-existant, communication with staff impossible and they were borderline rude. Food was less than mediocre, a lot of the lunch buffet was over-cooked leftovers from the previous nights dinner buffet! Drinks, though brand name, were very weak and the wine was horrendous to the point were it was undrinkable. I would rather have stayed at a regular hotel (at perhaps $100/night) and gone into town for breakfast, lunch and dinner - these meals would have totalled not more than $60.00 per person per day and an additional $20 for drinks you would have come out ahead, with better food and more fun! You could not pay me to go back to the Occidental! Luckily we had a fabulous stay in Los Suenos.
