Costa Rica Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews Reviews
Occidental Costa Smeralda All-Inclusive 03/23/2004
Reviewers Rating: Great
Just returned from a week at Costa Smerelda with my wife and two sons (5 and 8). Overall the resort was very good. Friendly helpfull staff, very good food (especially in the al acarte restaurant and there was no limit on the number of times you could go to it). Grounds are very nice, lush gardens etc but the hotel and room units are located on a series of small hills so lots of up and down.
Beach is nice although not all that long maybe a 10 minute walk, quite wide at low tide and shaded with overhanging trees, narrows at high tide but still useable. Also possible to walk around the headlands of the small bay to the Nakuti hotel next door at low tide.
Pool is nice freeform, but parents should note there is no shallow end it is all about 4.5 to 5 feet deep. While there is a small Kids Pool it is very small (ie. about 15 feet in diameter and about 2 feet deep. Good for very small children but nothing really for kids 3 to 5 years old.
Hotel rooms are adequate but plain. Ceramic floors etc., relatively clean, great views out over the bay from our unit (ask for rooms 601 to 608) we could see the new Four Seasons Resort on the other side of the Bay ($500 a day). Took a great tour of Paolo Verde National park arranged through a Canadian guy Micheal Mills with Allegro Tours. Tour guides were locals ask for Riccardo, who spoke excellent english.
