Hotel Reviews: Cancún & Cozumel
Camino Real 02/12/01
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
We had a great vacation thanks to all the other trip reports so I thought I'd return the favor. We took an a 7 day Apple Vacations trip to Cancun 1/26-2/2.

HOTEL - Camino Real
I must say I really agonized over which hotel to choose, as there were so many and so many good recommendations. But the majority of good reviews were for the Camino and they were so right! It is a beautiful hotel - surrounded 3 sides by water. We stayed in the pyramid building on the 4th floor with a unbelievable ocean view. It looked just like a postcard. Everyone at the hotel was very friendly and helpful. Maid service was twice a day! The pool area is rather unique in that half is regular swimming pool with swim-up bar and half lagoon with fish & turtle swimming around and then the ocean was just steps away. They have a great sound system that's always playing great tunes.

RESTAURANTS
Hotel Restaurants - we ate at the snack bar on the ocean side several times. It was perfect for afternoon guacamole & salsa & Corona's! We also ate at Maria Bonita-great Mexican food and atmosphere. Lots of singing & dancing with strolling mariachi's. We had the best appetizer there - I don't remember what it was called but the waiter brought the big stoneware pot full of a bubbling cheese mixture and made little quesedeas for us - it was to die for!

Another great restaurant within walking distance of the Camino is Bogart's. Based on the movie Casablanca. They have a statue of Rick & Elisa out front. The ladies sit in big peacock chairs and then the best part … a lady comes around with a velvet pillow for your feet!! There were beautiful fountains and waterfalls. The waiters were all costumed - Moroccan and of course there was a piano player! The food was great too. I had sea bass and the chef came out and introduced himself and chatted with us for a while. Like I said everyone is very friendly.

We also went to the Outback Steakhouse and were not impressed. They just don't get the kind of beef we're used to in the US. Another night we ate at OK Maguey's - Mexican themed another fun place in the Kukulkan mall. We took the lobster cruise too which was fun. They grill huge lobster tails right on the ship in the middle of the ocean - very romantic. Our last dinner was at the Blue Bayou at the Hyatt Caribe. Beautiful décor - 2 story with a huge carved column in the center with water trickling down, tons of plants with little white lights. That night they had a 3 piece jazz band. We had Cajun lobster tails and the most tender escargot we've ever had.

TOURS
We didn't do much because we just like to sit around the pool or the beach most of the time but what we did do I really enjoyed. We took the Jungle tour with the 2 person speed boats - it was fun driving those! They take you through several channels and end up in the ocean near a coral reef where you can snorkel. We saw a 6-foot alligator sunning himself.

The best hand's down with Chichen Itza! It was just breath taking! The tour we took was first class too - it started with buffet breakfast at Patrick O'Brien's, then a 2-1/2 hour bus ride on the nicest bus I've ever been on - plush reclining seats, bathroom, & cool drinks served by our tour coordinator. On the way home there was even a movie. There was a nice lunch at a nearby restaurant that was next to a sink hole that you could swim in.

Chichen Itza was worth the whole trip to Cancun. It was so impressive. I just can't describe everything I saw. You must see it!!

CLUBS
We're not really into the wild club scene but we felt obliged to check a couple of them out. The most fun we had was at Coco Bongo. (Guys be prepared to be frisked before you go in) What a show they put on! Impersonators, dancers, gymnasts and every so often they'd shoot out confetti, paper towels & a blast of cold air. Everyone was dancing on the bar and on the balcony overlooking the main dance floor. A few of the less-inhibited ladies removed their panties to add to the wild show!

We also went to Senor Frogs - I think it's a requirement! It was fun but after Coco Bongo's we were spoiled!

The Super Bowl was being played while we were there so we stopped by Sports World to place a few bets. That's the only gambling in Mexico.

It was a wonderful vacation! I wouldn't hesitate to return to the Camino Real & Cancun!
