Hotel & Resort Reviews: Cancún & Cozumel
Fiesta Americana, Cozumel 11/15/01
Reviewers Rating: Good
=To update the Fiesta Americana review from 1999 (left by an earlier guest), we were at the resort in September, 2000. The ammenities described are still accurate; it's a full service resort with two restaurants, deep freeze air conditioning, non-motarized water sports at the water side (including kayak, windsurfing, snorkelling equiptment and extra towels), good dive shop, and they even claim the running water is good to drink but they still sell bottled water at $3US so bring some of your own supplies and snacks). It is not, however, nearly as posh as its sister properties in Cancun, which are top notch luxury. This hotel in Cozumel is just ok. All the rooms face the ocean, but you better insist on a room above the third floor or all you'll be seeing is leaves and concrete. "The beach," is actually a large, tastefully designed, concrete platform with sand on it, so although the descent into the water is an easy ten steps, it gets rocky so I highly recommend bringing ! water socks or water shoes. To be honest, Cozumel beaches aren't that great anywhere (except on the East side where the ocean currents are so strong it's not too safe, or the all-inclusive resorts that bring in their sand beaches). The dive shop is a bit expensive if you don't buy a package in advance (I went once and the two-tank dive with equiptment cost me $80 while my co-divers got the 5 day package at about $200). I must say the divemaster was excellent and I felt very safe and well taken care of. Now we only ate at the beach side restaurant once, because my father got sick afterwords - we ate at several local places and didn't have a problem so we did not return to cuisine ala Fiesta. The hotel is out on its own and if you don't want to take a taxi, a ten minute walk to the right (south, along the water) there's another little hotel with a great, and much more affordable breakfast, lunch and dinner menu and a water side bar (mini-Corona special:$1US). The snorkelling there was great, too - saw an eel and a flounder.
