Hotel & Resort Reviews: Cancún & Cozumel
Karisma Akumal Beach Resort 03/27/02
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
An hour south of the Cancun airport but it took our bus two hours after the four other resort stops along the way.....worst part of the entire week after a 4 pm flight from Toronto. Two sides to this lovely resort - superior all ocean front rooms on the south end of the beach and the older section has ocean view rooms on the north end. Beautiful white, cool sand, lots of palappas and loungers, clear water with lots of fish and some turtles for off-shore snorkeling. Amazing large pool and jacuzzi. Music was a mix of latin and tunes we are familiar with from home. We stayed in the superior rooms - quite large with comfortable bed. Food was delicious at the beachfront buffet - different nights, different themes - candles on the tables at night and linen tablecloths and napkins. Friendly staff....excellent drinks; grounds are beautifully kept. Two a la cartes (Mexican and Italian) would rival any city's fine dining experience. Animation team was very energetic and entertaining. We went on our own using local transportation "collectivos" 12 pax white vans (cheap) to the ruins at Tulum (10 minutes away) and half hour to Playa de Carmen to the ferry for Cozumel for the day - return trip $29 Cdn - 45 minute crossing, then walk right into the main street of town. When you tire of shopping (mostly jewelry and Cozumel souvenirs), grab a cab and ask to go to a beach for snorkeling - very friendly and very accommodating for $10US. Our cabbie took us to Playa Corono (yes...like the beer). We were two couples (early 50s) and we had a great time..lots of fish and coral to see under the water - reef was very alive and colourful. We made it back to the resort before the supper buffet closed at 9:30. Highly recommend this resort...definitely the 4 stars advertised.
