Hotel & Resort Reviews:
Cancún & Cozumel
Karisma Akumal Beach Resort 05/02/02
Reviewers Rating: Great
Good Economy Class Resort. The ride from the airport was about an hour. Akumal is more remote and less developed than the rest of the area. The beaches are great with a reef just offshore which is great to snorkel. The rooms had comfortable beds, ocean view, and a terrace. But, our first floor room's sliding door did not lock and it took many complaints to the management to get it fixed. The buffet restaurant offered a generally good selection of items. The waitstaff was extremely friendly and helpful. We were told not to tip the staff by our travel agent but we found at the end of our week that services improved greatly with tips, especially the housekeeping staff. We never had the same number of towels in our room from one day to the next but we found that other guests which did tip had an overabundance of towels, soap, shampoo etc. The dive shop where we were supposed to get our complimentary snorkel equipment never had any equipment for us. We had to walk down to the next resort and rent equipment. The activities staff were a bit clickish. My travel companion and I were sometimes ignored by the activities staff when we tried to get equipment. Then the staff did not explain the operation of the equipment. Akumal is the site of sea turtle hatchings and a nice side activity down the beach is the sea turtle rescue organization which takes tourists on night turtle hatching hunts right on the beaches at the end of the hotel. There are many day trips available from the hotel which are all well worth the extra cost. Overall a good experience 2 1/2 to 3 stars, with a few small exceptions.
