My family and I went to Cancun in June of 2001. We had a wonderful time and would recommend Cancun as a vacation spot to anyone. However, we had very bad experiences at the Flamingo. We had reserved and paid for an all-inclusive package at Costa Real, but when we got there they were "overbooked." They convinced that Flamingo was just as good and told us that we had no choice, so eventually we agreed to stay there. Some of the highlights:
promised ocean view, got street view
bed in my parent's room had a broken bed and broken tv (took hours to get another tv, bed never got fixed)
service was terrible, they were extremely rude whenever we asked for anything and tried to charge us even though we were all inclusive--on our last day a waiter told us that we had to pay for diet coke even though we had been getting it free for three days, asked another waiter..no problem
had to ask for extra toilet paper and towels
food was not very good, and buffet was not fresh
I think maybe we were treated badly because they knew that they were not our first choice, but even so we paid for a much nicer hotel and the least they could have done was made us feel welcome. Over all, it seems that the staff did not want to wait on us and ignored us several times.
Good things:
Nice beach
excellent pool, although it closed early-I think 8
recommend the rum punch from the bar
next to shopping mall
Hopefully, people who reserve this hotel intentionally are treated better, but I don't know
we had a good time anyway because we spent most of our time at the Costa Real and the Grand Caribe Real, and because of their mistake we are staying at the Costa Real free this June
Recommend:
parasailing
trip to Cozumel to scuba dive at the park..if you are not certified the guy will hold your hand the whole time or stay right next to you, excellent for first time divers...also have snorkeling
bar hopping tour
Carlos n Charlies for food or drinks
bus system for transportation...fast and cheap
Bad:
do not get suckered in by time share sellers
be prepared for rudeness if you shop at the flea markets, don't look interested in something unless you really want it...they will try very hard to sell it or get mad if you don't buy
Hope this helps,
Have a great time!
