I'll start with the good. The resort is brand new and actually two resorts in one (the Colonial-- I stayed at-- and the Kantenah). The Colonial is decorated in a Spanish style (fountains, etc.), while the Kantenah is Mexican (Aztec sculptures, etc.). Both have all marble floors and are open-air concepts (ie. not many walls). There are wooden bridge walkways and covered paving stone walkways throughout the grounds, which largely are still covered by rain forest. The resort is huge, but well laid out. Regardless of where your room is, you'll do a lot of walking...it didn't bother me though.
The room was nice....standard size, marble floors, comfortable beds, nice marble shower, etc. The mini-bar is re-stocked every other day which was fine.
Service was good...very friendly and helpful.
Food was better than I expected, but it's still buffet food, so people shouldn't get their hopes up too high. The a la carte restaurants were good as well.
The beach is large, secluded and very nice (some coral and seaweed, but not much). Beautiful clear blue water with lots of beach chairs and shady areas. This is where I spent most of my time.
There are pools all over the place....the main pool is huge.
The resort is in a good spot, 20 minutes to Paya del Carmen and about the same to the Tulum ruins.
The not so good....
I had to wait a long time (2 hours) before my room was ready, but I had a few beverages while waiting, so it wasn't that bad.
Waiting in line to book the a la carte restaurants was a pain. We stood in line for a while once only to get up to the desk and have the girl tell us that she was not taking anymore reservations. The next time we waited for over an hour and did manage to make reservations, but by this time there was not a lot of selection left. I would tell people to go straight to that line once they check-in and get it over with.
Overall though my trip was amazing! The negatives were minor and the resort, beach, etc. were great. I wouldn't hesitate recommending it.
