Cancun & Cozumel Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
Riu Tequila 03/24/2003
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
We just returned from a lovely week (March 3-10) at the Riu Tequila (near Playa del Carmen) Mexico.
Here is a brief assessment of the key aspects of the resort: Grounds: gorgeous, lush, well maintained and very tropical. Food: Consistently good to excellent buffet, with extensive choices. We also tried one of the resort's a la carte restaurants, (the Steakhouse) but decided that an equally good meal was to be had at the buffet. Considering the fact that people had to line up at 7:00 a.m. to get a reservation for the Steakhouse, I really don't think its worth the effort!
Drinks: Very good selection of cocktails, well made. Drinks are not "too sweet" as I have experienced elsewhere. Service: Consistently excellent, with courteous and friendly staff that tried to ensure visitors were enjoying themselves.
Beach: lovely, wide and long. Good amount of shade. Crystal clear waters that enable you to walk out 100 feet or so and still see your toes. The only downside is that the beach is shared with one of the the other two Riu hotels, so that it can become quite crowded during peak vaction seasons.
Pools: Lovely pools at the Riu Tequila, separated by a huge palapa that houses a restaurant and bar. Pool also has a swim up bar, which I adore. Lots of shade to be had at the pool. Rooms: Certainly large enough, clean and charming. Room decor is a little on the rustic side, but is not run down in any way. Public areas: Gorgeous lobby with lots of space to sit and relax. As per the heritage of the resort chain, the emphasis is on spanish colonial decor with lots of dark wood, and iron grille work. Elegant and beautiful without being stuffy.
Paths through the resort are well paved and buildings and facilities are well marked. Landscaping is lovely - a real treat for the eyes.
Little extras: Lounge chairs at the pool have padded cushions. The staff walked around the pool one day just after lunch handing out freshly sliced watermelon and pineapple - a nice touch! No extra charge for room refrigerator or safe - as one should expect (but not always receive)in a 4-5 star hotel. Liquor dispenser in room!
A few minor areas for improvement: Air conditioning in 2nd floor rooms is okay, but could be stronger. Some of the beach towels (not the ones delivered to the room) are looking past their prime and should be thrown out. Reservation practices for a la carte restaurants are not client-centred and should be improved - no 7:00 a.m. line-ups, please!
These little things aside, the resort is wonderful, and makes a great spot for an active, fun filled vacation or a laid back, week of sunning, swimming and sipping margaritas. Enjoy!
Sharon
