My mother and I just returned from a week stay at Oasis Akumal and are feeling more worn out than when we left for our vacation.
The hotel is apparently divided, or segregated, rather, into the "Italian" side and the "International" side. It is apparent that Oasis Akumal caters entirely to its Italian clientelle.
The worst part of this is the NON-STOP obnoxious entertainment the "Animators" group (part of the Italians' vacation package) provides for the Italian guests. All activities are broadcasted over excrutiatingly loud speakers with blaring cheese-pop music throbbing in the back ground. From aerobics class in the water to dance lessons to relay races to their late-night entertainment, you are forever feeling your spleen throb with the bass of the speakers. (Except between 2 and 5, when they are all having their siesta and the beach is quite peaceful.) Seriously, I was standing in the water with my mother about 100 meters from this aerobics activity, and we were shouting at eachother just to have a conversation.
Club Oasis booked us in rooms in the Italian side, meaning we were kep up late very night by their entertainment. We were told that no other rooms were availible.
The food was pretty good.
The drinks were kinda watery.
The staff, when asked if they could help us determine when the shuttle would be there the next morning to take us to the airport (included in our package) dismissed us with the wave of a hand and told us to take seven pesos and go use the pay phone and find out for ourselves.
The beach was very nice.
The other guests were nice in that they enjoyed co-miserating over watery pina coladas.
Unless you are Italian or deaf or happent to enjoy a non-stop MTV ITALIA beach scene, we both would suggest another resort, such as Akumal Beach Resort.
