Cancun & Cozumel Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
Bahia Principe Tulum 10/19/2003
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
My husband and I stayed here the week of September 15. I booked this last minute so was unsure of what to expect as we usually stay at smaller resorts and as there hasn't been a review done on this site for a while here's mine.
This place is amazing!! The lobby is impressive and you are greeted with a welcoming drink by a smiling staff. There was quite a line-up for check-in but it moved quickly and I found that we had been given a room on a higher floor with a kingsize bed as requested when I booked with Selloffvacations.com
The room was very spacious, spotless and clean and was kept so all week by our maid. The mini-bar was restocked everyday with anything we might have used from it...chocolate bars, chips, water, pop and beer. Plenty of towels in the bathroom and of good quality.
The grounds are absolutely outstanding, lush grass lawns with flowering shrubs and palm trees all navigated by lovely wide stamped concrete pathways. We always walked everywhere for the exercise but if needed golf carts ran at regular 10 minute intervals.
We loved the beach and ocean, yes there are some rocks and we did take water-shoes but didn't use them as the rocks were easy to see and not a problem, at this time of year the ocean is so warm and inviting, there were lots of fish to see.
The resort is so spacious that it actually felt like our private little resort, there were plenty of sunbeds and palapas you didn't have to reserve one in fact we used the same ones all week on the beach near the quiet pool, it was great my husband could swim all he wanted in the ocean whilst I was never far away having a dip in the pool. We were fairly closeby the Gran Tortuga restaurant and so would have breakfast and lunch there each day..great food!. I would walk the couple of minutes around 7am each day and have coffee at the 24 hour snack bar, sitting and looking at my surroundings and at the ocean I truly felt I was in a little piece of paradise!
The main buffet..the Yucatan..was open breakfast, lunch and dinner and quite honestly we loved our evening meal so much that we only booked one a la carte..Don Pablos..it was wonderful, top class service and airconditioned! The main buffet is open air and beautiful though I did get a few mosquito bites after a couple of days so from then on sprayed with OFF in the evenings...it was humid as it is their rainy season.
The Lobby Bar Akumal seemed to be the meeting place in the evenings, we found the service to be a bit on the slow side.
We never did manage to see an evening show!! we are early risers and so after a full day on the beach, swimming and moving the sunbed in and out of the shade as needed and the occasional trip to the bar! we were always ready for an early night! This holiday was pure relaxation, we had done the day trips to the ruins etc. the year before when we stayed at Copacabana Riviera Maya.
We walked one morning to the sister resort next door Bahia Principe Akumal where guests are also allowed to use the amenities.
It is basically the same layout a little newer, though that wasn't apparent as both resorts are kept immaculate, the main difference being that Akumal doesn't have much beach at all, lots of rocks here.
The guests were a mix of Canadian, British, Americans, Spanish and German, mostly couples with maybe only half a dozen children but that could have been the time of year as school had just restarted after summer break..I did see a great-looking kids club but it wasn't used whist we were there.
All in all this was a wonderful holiday and although we never go to the same resort twice, I could really look foreward to a return trip here, it is so spacious and well-laid out along the beach that it never felt crowded.
One last mention should go to the staff, they were outstanding, hardworking and always pleasant to speak with, they just aimed to please.

Carol
