Cancun & Cozumel Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews Reviews
Avalon Reef Club Isla Mujeres 04/15/2004
Reviewers Rating: Great
My daughter and I just returned from Isla Mujeres (Just off the coat of Cancun) and the Avalon Reef Club resort. Our package was purchased through Orbitz (which I would highly recommend), the "all-inclusive" option. When we arrived in Cancun (post-immigration, which is always dreary), the shuttle operators (Best Day) greeted us and wisked us away without delay. When we arrived at the pier (since the resort is on the island, you must take a boat to get there) there were several tour operators more than happy to assist in getting you to the right place. YOU WILL WAIT for the boat, so plan on wearing something you can remove since there is limited seating that is not directly in the sun. The boat ride is roughly 30 minutes, but very scenic. Arriving at the dock (which is private) they will take your luggage to the resort for you. You will be greeted by a "representative," which is helpful...but know that if you sign up for "the tour" you will be pushed to purchase a time share. If you don't mind or are interested, they give you a nice walk-around, lunch, and free gift. The rooms are small, but clean and functional. Everything BUT the Steak restaurant (Porterhouse) is included in the package, including room service. It will take you a day or so to figure out the timing of everything (when to eat, when to get a beach chair), but you get the routine soon enough. The staff is wonderful....ask and you shall receive. However, tipping is appropriate and expected (all inclusive does not apply here). The food is "good"...not exceptional, not poor. You will be citing your room number ALOT and signing, even though you're not charged. There is currency exchange at the front desk (which was a better rate than the airport) and a small gift shop for incidentals. Mopeds and golf carts are available, but a short walk away into the village. I suggest a ride around the island (doesn't take long)....the shoreline is breathtaking! The village is typical, but inexpensive and VERY safe. You can shop in peace.
All in all.....it was a great, family-oriented (no college students) spot that provided a taste of Mexican culture without the chaos of the city. You are removed from Cancun.....but in a good way!
