Grand Palladium Riviera Resort & Spa 02/28/2006
Reviewers Rating: Good
Grand Palladium Riviera Resort & Spa We stayed at the Grand Palladium Riviera Resort & Spa from February 18th - 25th, 2006. I know this is long but I wanted to capture everything. We booked and paid for the Colonial/Kantenah side, but when we arrived we were upgraded to the new Riviera side. The Colonial/Kantenah side overbooked by 200 rooms. We didn't want the upgrade we wanted the original side but they refused. The Riviera side is nice, it's brand new. But it is not up for prime season yet. We had ants in our bed and our room the first night, they had to change the sheets and spray the room, the ants were back again a couple of days later, they had to come into our room again to spray. They said the spray wasn't toxic, but how do we know? The screen door hadn't been installed yet--too new; they installed it when we inquired where it was. We had to beg for a king size bed, it took them about 4 hours, but they finally found one and we had to move all our stuff. They only restock the minibar every other day. Not frequently enough. Bottles of water are only a litre size, we are huge water drinkers. We drink 2 litres each day per person just on our own, especially with the heat, as we were blessed with 7 days of sunshine. We went to the front desk every day to get more water. It became routine, when we went to the lobby we grabbed water. The minibar didn't stay cold at all. It is connected to the room electricity, which goes off as soon as you leave the room. The rooms are now on a sensor, so the electricity comes on when you activate the sensor opening/closing the door and moving around the room. No more bringing a card from home and leaving it in the slot for the week. No air-conditioning while we were out meant our clothes were really damp all week. The buffet food was great, the drinks were made inconsistently, some really good, some watered down. They were using too much ice to make them...so we drank shots. Book your dinner reservations as soon as you arrive at the resort, they book up fast, unless you like eating dinner at 9pm at night. The Steakhouse was good, great service The Japanese restaurant is good, but remember to book the show table, it's a special reservation. The Brazilian restaurant was okay. Our friends didn't like the Bamboo nor the Ribs and Grill. We preferred the buffet to the Brazilian restaurant. The Riviera Resort pool was freezing...took a few drinks to get in! This is definitely the quiet side vs. the Kantenah/Colonial side. The beach was a huge disappointment, rocks and coral everywhere. Guess they are not allowed to remove these due to the Mexican rules. Bring your water shoes. You have to walk about 20 mins down the beach to the Colonial/Kantenah side for the good beach and good swimming area. The trams are very handy. We rode them frequently, especially when you are dressed up for dinner. Ladies you will be carrying your nice shoes for dinner as there is tons of walking to the restaurants. Gentlemen you will be refused dinner at the restaurants if you don't have long pants on. We witnessed a group refused dinner at the Steakhouse due to the fact the men were in shorts. They were furious and swearing at the poor guy at the restaurant. We love Mexico. The people at the resorts are friendly, kind and gentle. No matter what resort, we have always been treated well. We do tip regularly though, and so were other people. This is our 3rd all-inclusive resort in the Mayan Riviera in 3 years. The Cancun Airport is a nightmare
it took us 1.5 hours to get thru customs, but it was a Saturday and since the hurricane hit the airport, it is pushing 2 terminals of people thru 1 terminal. We took a private van to the resort, $70 US. Well worth every penny. We left the airport at 1150 am and arrived at 1250 pm, the bus arrived at 230 pm. The luggage area was a disaster too. Luggage was pulled off the carousel and placed on the floor by the carousel, it wasnt until we started walking around that we discovered this, and then you have to look for your luggage in the sea of black luggage. Overall we made the best of it. You have to. It's your vacation. Nothing is perfect but we won't go back to the Palladium. I think it was opened too soon. It is a nice looking resort, and it has potential thats for sure. It's just not broken in yet.
