Curacao Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
Breezes SuperClubs 02/28/2003
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
We just returned from a 2 week vacation at Breezes and loved it! After reading alot of negative reviews about the resort we were a little leery so here is an honest opinion...we have travelled quite a bit and to quite a few other islands, Mexico, etc. I was impressed with the arrival at the airport...had our wristbands put on there, filled out our info there before we got to the hotel. The bus was right there waiting, 15 minutes to the hotel and check-in only took a couple of minutes and we had our key and safe key. Our luggage took about an hour to be brought to our room. We were in building 8 which is the farthest away from the main activity area but was nice and quiet for the most part until all of us crazy Canadians got together. Our room was quite large with a huge Queensize bed, love seat, small table with 2 chairs, and a dresser. A small hallway to the bathroom had large closets on 1 side and a long built in bench on the other which was great to toss things on. Bathroom had tub with shower and a hair dryer. Also in the closet was an iron and ironing board. One thing we didn't read in any of the writeups or the Sunquest book prior to going and we wish we had as our luggage would have been a lot less was that they do have laundry service...bags and lists of articles in the closet. Large balconey, with 2 iron chairs and a small table. We were on the 2nd floor right in the middle which overlooked the pool and a gorgeous ocean view. Our room was number 8208. Except for some of the rooms on the ground level all have ocean views. The only complaint I have was the bathroom, although kept clean by our maid, was in need of updating the tile, grout. Quite grungy looking but we did know it was cleaned every day. The quiet pool was right at our doorstep. Only negative thing was that the nearest bar was a 2 minute walk away ha ha! The beach was very nice but did have some areas of small coral and also you had to watch out about stepping on sea urchins (I never saw any but others did) so beach shoes would be smart to bring. Not rough water as there is a reef right in front of the hotel. We always managed to find lounge chairs no matter what time we went down to the pool or beach. Not much shade around that pool so when it got really hot we just pulled our chairs up onto the grass under the palms. Beautiful breeze all the time. Great variety at Jimmy's Buffet for all meals. We could not get over how tender the steak was at nite and usually were not overcooked. You name it for breakfast and you could get it. Fresh fruit was wonderful. Major complaint with Jimmy's was that it was very disorganized where the waitress/waiters were concerned. One waitress would bring you coffee, wine, etc. and then if you needed something else they would be at the far end cleaning tables. They weren't assigned to specific areas of the dining room or specific duties so sometimes it took time to get something else that you needed. Most of the time we got our wine from the bar which was right beside the restaurant even though there were carafes of wine in the restaurant...took too long to get their attention. If you go try and find Yvonne's area as she is an excellent waitress and so friendly and cheerful (tell her we said so...the 4 Canadians that gave her the fancy CDN pin and the big hugs when we said goodbye to her). The Italian and Japanese restaurant are excellent but book as soon as you check in as they become full very fast. I had a slight mishap Sumo wrestling and required a Doctor and then had to see the nurses for a week and everything was handled very professionally! The staff were so helpful and friendly. Our Sunquest rep is not allowed to have a spot at the hotel as he works for another tour group also and would be competing with Tropical Tours, the resident tour company so you can phone him anytime for info. We had him book a guide to take us around the island to whatever we wanted to see. It was terrific if you don't want to rent a car. There were only 6 of us in an air-conditioned van. It cost us $35 U.S. each and he picked us up at 9:15 and brought us back at 3:30. He will do any type of tour you want and he is English speaking and just excellent. His name is Ronny Cathalina with "Wild Curacao" telephone number (599)5610027 Fax (599)7470382 and we would highly recommend him. We stopped at a local restarant Jaanchie'z for lunch (you pay for yourself, not included in the $35 but you don't pay for Ronny's lunch) and it was really good food and reasonably priced. We had read about this place from someone else's posting who had said it was very good. Terrific thing to do to get to see the island and not have to drive yourself. We hopped the city bus (really small vans) into town quite a few times. Right across the street from the hotel and comes every 5 minutes or so. Cost is $1 U.S. so it is cheap and takes you right downtown. One thing to be aware of is that the hotel doesn't cash CDN traveller's cheques, only American and then only $100.00 a day. The Casino will cash CDN travellers cheques with I.D. There is an ATM machine on the outside wall of the hotel right beside the Casino! We also ate in town on the waterfront at a place called The Grill King. Excellent, excellent, excellent. My husband and I had 2 huge T-bone's, soup, salad, desert and a bottle of wine for $87 U.S. Our friend had a lobster that he had never seen anything larger. They brought it out to him live to see first. He had lobster thermidor and his wife had chicken...with wine, desert, etc. it was $105 U.S. All in all we had a terrific time and the hotel and staff were wonderful. We would definitely go back to Breezes!
