Curacao Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews Reviews
Sunset Waters Beach Resort 03/26/2004
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
September 2003
We chose Curacao based on a picture of the pontoon bridge with the pastel sotrefronts in the background in a AAA brochure.
The island is somewhat barren and stark but as we drove our rented car to the resort we were very pleased with the location, about 40 min from the airport and about and hour from the bustle of Punda/Otrabanda resorts. It is on coral cliffs with everyroom having an ocean view. At check in Mary was great, took care of us and we settled into our room. The original room had a spiral stairway which was difficult to manuver so the next day we requested a room all on 1 level and were immediately given exactly what we requested.
the beach was very secluded with an enclosed "lagoon" which had access to the ocean also on the beach area, private snorkel area right off the shore. The sounds of coral being washed by the surf was very relaxing.
The rooms were well kept yet dated, sort of on a Club Med basis in Turks & Caicos, but by no means run down. The premises were neat and there was always were employee's tending to guests needs.
The staff was first class! From Norman, the asst manager, Rudy "the wheel man", Gilmar & Antonio (barkeeps) as well as cooks, Zoot, servers, Myra & "Gretta". The meals were varied with up to 5 entree choices for dinner on a nightly basis. Breakfasts were either cook to order to ala carte as were lunches.
The dining area was all open air and spacious.
The swimming pool was about as well maintained as you can expect given the climate, but we are beach people and spent most time there.
Since we had a car rental we were able to explore on our own and pretty much did the whole island. Takes a while to get used to the locals and their driving habits, mainly speed, but after a day or so we blended right in.
A drive into town to swim with the dolphins was as good as it gets. As well as walking around downtown and seeing the pontoon bidge, flyover, pastel buildings, floating market, etc. We also did and excursion to Klein Curacao for a day which was worth while, but do not expect the ride to/from to be first class. It is a converted dive boat and mostly caters to divers, although the Captain and crew were more than friendly, there was spartan seating accomodations. Still well worth the time/money! Met a couple of ladies from Indiana who were the only other Americans on the boat and had a great time with them.
In summary I would give the resort a thumbs up. It would be wise to go for the all inclusive since you are really off the beaten path and it would be time consuming to try to find meals 3 times a day even with a car. This is one of the few all inclusives that we have been to which includes drinks all day/night long, not just with meals.
Peaceful would b
