Barcelo Solymar 07/19/02
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
I stayed at the Solymar for 1 week from July 7 to July 14. The hotel has a very impressive lobby hanging plants off of every floor, tropical birds, couches and lounge areas everywhere. The first room we were in was the bungalow, which was spacious but the air conditioning must have been broken for a while, because it had a rather musty smell to it. We moved into the actual hotel part of the hotel and it was wonderful. The rooms were cleaned after 30min of you being out of your room, the towels were refreshed early in the day, and the maid kept our room spotless. The food left much to be desired, but there was always a few things that were appetizing. I guess it just depends on how picky you are. Breakfast we had omlettes and bacon, lunch was typically some king of bbq'd meat made in front of you. The pasta was ok too. Dinner was roast beef or ham, just overcooked, not disgusting like some described it. Nobody was starving by any means. The service was excellent, partly because there wasn't a 'full house'. The beach was AMAZING. Crystal clear water and nothing to step on. Definately not like going to other beaches where I'm usually scared to take my next step. There were plenty of palapas even at 10:30 in the morning. All in all the resort was great, and I would reccommend it more to families rather than younger travellers looking for a party as I have to agree with a previous poster, it was a bit boring...but if you are just going to veg on a beautiful beach for some r&r, this is the place for you.
