We just returned from the Solymar and overall it was a good trip but I would not go back to this hotel. There were five of us in our late twenties all male. We have traveled all over the Caribbean and agreed this was probably the worst resort we have stayed in. We stayed in the bungalows in late September. Overall the hotel is really nice but management has to fix a lot of problems.Here are some of the problems that we found along with people we met there. The resort was half closed not a problem if it was dead but it was pretty busy. Would have been nice to have the buffet open by the beach just for lunch. Watch out for the steps going to the pool grill/bar. Everyday somebody fell. One guy looked to be hurt pretty bad. The staff didnt look like they cared even though he was lying on the ground. The bungalow are dirty. We saw cockroaches in them and were not the only ones. Some of the staff are really pushy and will get angry at you if you say no. One staff member even told a guest to "shut up" during dancing lessons. They will ask you straight up for your shoes or shirt. If you want to give something give it to somebody who does not ask you for it. There are plenty of staff you recieve no tips or gifts give it to them. There are so many scams so watch out. A bunch of guests took two taxis to a disco that was closed so talk to your tour reps. Once management gets their act together I am sure this resort will be one of the best in varadero. The a la carte meals are pretty good. Just be prepared if you order the red snapper to have a whole fish!! The buffet is basically the same every day but its not too bad. The pizza at lunch is really gooo. For anybody going to varadero there is a nice open air disco/bar within walking distance of this resort. It has a live band and has a karokee bar upstairs. Ask one of the locals or Alex in the band to take you. Its better than the pirate cave. Talk to Onya in the buffet he is really nice and would love some burnt cds!! And the best advice stay away from Yoelle in the animation crew.
