We returned from our stay at the Melia Varadero on April 15th. I can't rave enough about how great the Melia Varadero was! The hotel is beautiful, the food is great, and the ocean is breathtaking. We found the service to be a little slow in the Italian restaurant, but hey, we're on vacation and have all the time in the world. The pizza, hotdogs and hamburgers at the Italian restaurant are very good. I recommend the sweet & sour chicken at the Chinese restaurant!
The beach is a little rocky in spots, but the water is a beautiful green/blue, with an average temperature of 28 degrees. There are catamaran rides, banana boat rides, peddle boats, kayaks, and snorkeling equipment available. There is also a beach grill that serves excellent food, ie. pork chops, chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, etc.
The entertainment in the evenings was the best I've seen in my three trips to Cuba. One night they did excerpts from several different Broadway shows. Very well done.
The busiest bar seemed to be the lobby piano bar. Very good Mojitos to be found here!
We enjoyed the two swimming pools, but preferred the ocean. The pools were always full of children... The pool bar is a nice place to sit and relax, but the service is a little slow. But as I said before... we're on vacation and not in a hurry!
I highly recommend the Melia Varadero. It is, in my opinion, a 5 star resort. You can't go wrong with this one!
