Playa Caleta 12/03/2006
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
My friend and I have just returned from a week at the Playa Caleta resort in Varadero Cuba. I have been to this resort before and really loved it. The staff are all amazing, always a smile and a kiss to greet you. This trip was no exception. The food was a little more limited but that could have been because there were not as many guests as the higher season. The buffet always had something we liked but we are not picky eaters. When we were too late for dinner the pizza at the Floresta café downstairs were really good. (They have burgers and fries there too.) We did go to the Casa Blanca for dinner one evening. The food and atmosphere were wonderful, worth booking. The room was clean and bright. We had an ocean view room on the 7th floor. The view from the balcony was just like a travel brochure. There was always plenty of hot water and the air-conditioning worked great. The elevators were working well this trip, sometimes they can be a little problematic
they have been known to close on the unsuspecting! The beach was beautiful, but since the weather for the week was against us we never got a chance to actually lay on it and soak up the sun
there was no sun for the whole week! We did comb the beach for some shells for our grand kids. There are always plenty of chairs at this resort as well as shade huts but because of the cool weather not too many brave souls were out. The red flag was flying high every day. There is only the one bar on the second floor. It got a little crowded in the evening but it still only took a few minutes to get a drink. There is a bar on the beach
closed because of the cold
and a bar at the pool, but again not too many willing to freeze there either. We did a side trip into Cardenas to have lunch with a friend. While there we took a horse drawn cab for a two hour tour of the city. The driver stopped for a taste of the local street food, kinda like a donut sprinkled with sugar
really good. Another stop for some peanut candy, made with crushed peanuts, butter, and sugar
also really good. My friend had never been to Havana so we rented a van and headed there for the day. It was great as we could spend as much time as we wanted at the places we stopped. The driver took us to a small restaurant for lunch. It was a very good meal and not too expensive. Wish I could remember the name for future reference! We stopped at a road side bar on the way home as the driver said we should have an espresso and a cigar to finish off our day
.two puffs and I was done! The double decker bus was a real hoot. It picks you up just outside the resort and for 5 pesos you can ride it all day, getting on and off whenever you want. We did the whole route up top
.all huddled together in our jackets. It is a great way to see the whole of Varadero. I have heard people say that they had a whole week of cool, cloudy weather
I thought they were exaggerating
.now I know they werent! We came home with less colour than when we left. We met some amazing people
Daniel, Antonio and Loretta, you guys are the best!!! It was a fabulous week, we had a blast with you all! Sun and heat would have been good, but hey thats how it goes
.you make the best of it! And we did!
Debbie
