    Playa Pesquero Cuba 01/22/2006
    Reviewers Rating: Excellent
Just returned from two fantastic weeks at Playa Pesquero. This was our first, but won’t be the last, visit to Cuba.
Having had a pretty traumatic year with one thing and another we were just looking for a totally ‘chill out’ holiday and this is certainly what we got at this great hotel. Okay, maybe not exactly five star but certainly a four in my opinion. I could find no fault with the food on offer in the main buffet restaurants except perhaps on two occasions, but that was more our fault as we went late and a few of the choices which had been popular had gone. The New Years Eve food was excellent, I honestly do not think there was one item of food which they did not have on offer, it was a seafood lovers dream with everything ranging from lobster, oysters, scallops, prawns, caviar – well, just about everything. Same with the meats on offer. We tried all the al-a-carte choices except the veggie one and found them very good, we had a bit of a wait in the Asian one but the food on offer was good. The Grill we went to twice, same with Romantica and the Gondola. Try the fillet in here it was ‘melt in the mouth’.
Our room 5014 was of good standard with large bathroom including full bath, with shower overhead, really powerful in our room and we had no problems with water pressure or temperature. (A word of warning here though, do take care getting into and out of the bath, if you use the rubber mat it is really slippery and I slipped on a couple of occasions and had a lovely bruise to show for it too! Also in the room a bidet and loo - in a separate dressing room there was a vanity basin unit with hairdryer and shaver point with good magnifying shaver mirror – the unit was really well lit too which was a bonus for me, due to being very short-sighted!) Also in this room was a large fitted wardrobe. Take some extra hangers though. Several large drawers and some shelves, in the wardrobe was a free digital safe, very easy to use. Iron and board were also supplied. Okay, now into the bedroom, which contained a super king bed, two bedside units – mind you the drawers were not much good as too shallow, dressing table with large mirror and two drawers, also well lit with down lighters spots and a lamp. Fitted unit with mini fridge which was replenished daily with two small beers (and I do mean SMALL) two normal sized cans of cola and a large water. If you don’t want the cans, give them to the gardeners who will be really grateful for a cool drink as they work so very hard. This is what we did, weighed ourselves down on the way to the beach each day and handed them out along the way. Also on this unit is a TV with a fair number of cable channels and a sports channel which showed highlights of English Premiership club matches. Sometimes just the goals which is maybe what you don’t want to see if your team were not the winners! Also on here was a coffee perc, but no kettle. Also in the room was a sofa (which I assume made up into a bed but we had no need to try it out) and an armchair with a nice coffee table. A really large and pleasant room in all, the only downside, for us personally, was the smell emitting from the aircon unit. It really ponged, very musty and, to be brutally honest, a smell a bit like stale urine. However, if you only put the unit on low it was not so much of a problem, and being winter months I suppose it was not getting much use and hence the smell. The room we were allocated was really peaceful. We heard nothing at night whatsoever. Also it was within easy walk of the main restaurants and the al-a-carte’s. A bit of a trek to the beach possibly for people who do not like to walk too far.
The evening entertainment was really rather good. Well it was for the first week which was just after Christmas and over New Year, I think they had got professionals in to do the shows as there was a marked reduction in the quality of the entertainment from 2nd Jan. Most people tended to gather in the lobby bar at night. Plenty of room usually as it is so big, but there was always a comfortable seat to be had in the large reception area to. A nice coffee bar located in this area too. Plenty of choice with drinks in the lobby bar, even champagne if you wish. The beers are fine too, and a good range of cocktails.
The beach was of fine silver sand and the sea a lovely turquoise colour. We tended to go to the left of the beach as found it better sand and easier to get in and out of the water along this stretch. Never any problems getting sun beds. You can also get rubber mats to cover the beds from the guy at the towel hut near the seafood restaurant, which made it a bit more comfy on the loungers. The beds around the pool area tended to get very busy with a lot of people reserving beds with towels early in the morning which really gets up my noise. Huge pool, and very shallow (ankle deep – ideal for toddlers) in some areas. Deeper in other parts.
All in all a great time – would recommend the Playa Pesquero highly. Please feel free to PM me of email if you want any more help.
