Sol Club, Cayo Largo 03/13/2004
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
Sol Club Cayo Largo review
Tour operator: Air Canada Vacations - good choice, leg room and o.k. food.
Cayo Largo…what a beautiful, idyllic island. The color of the water is pure turquoise and the sand is as white as snow.
Sol Club – we were very happy we chose this resort – it is by far the best resort in Cayo Largo. The facilities, service, staff, variety of food choices and our room were all excellent. We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary when we were there and received two bottles of champagne, a cake and fruit tray. We were also invited to a “honeymooners reception” We didn’t go because the day it was held was a busy day for us and we just couldn’t make it.
We had breakfast every day at the buffet, then lunch at either the Ranchon (beach restaurant) or the pool-side restaurant. Both these restaurants offer full service, and believe me, we over indulged for the whole week. I ate some of the best pizzas I’ve ever had at the pool restaurant and my husband absolutely died for the fish dishes at the Ranchon.
At night we usually went to the buffet, however also went to the two al-a-carte restaurants. We were happy with the food choices at all the restaurants.
The beach was as beautiful as described by all the reviewers but unfortunately, the week we were there it was exceptionally windy and the beach was red-flagged every day (apparently most of the beaches in Cuba were “red-flagged” that week!). We were able to walk on the beach but could not swim or take out any of the pedal boats or Hobie cats. We compensated for this by going to Paraiso and Sirenas beaches (by hotel shuttle) and honestly, no words can describe how beautiful these beaches are. They are sheltered so the winds don’t affect them. We could swim, snorkel, walk and just breathe in the wonderful surroundings.
Negatives: …and there always are!!! We knew there was nudity on Cayo Largo, however expected it to be discreet…unfortunately it wasn’t! The day we arrived we had a quick walk on the beach and it was reminiscent of the “streaker” song…”don’t look Ethel”. We were on the beach for about 5 minutes and saw 2 males walking towards us..minus clothes!! At the same time, as we looked towards the ocean, there were another another 2 people ‘frollicking’, again minus clothes! We met approximately 10 nude people walking on the beach in a ten minute span.
Next day we decided to walk to the East side of the beach, and in less than 5 minutes we were ‘met’ by 2 guys without clothes! And again, within a very short time, approximately 6 nude people walking on the shore. We actually met one guy with a t-shirt minus bottom part…again my husband had the response “don’t look Ethel!!!” …but I did anyway!!!
There were families with children on the beach and based on their reactions, we knew they were as uncomfortable with the nudity as we were. Friends of ours who went to Cayo Largo in 2003, did not see the same amount of nudism as we experienced, which leads us to believe that perhaps Cayo Largo is becoming ‘known’ as a haven for exhibitionism, because we honestly do not believe that true naturists would behave in this manner.
Would we go back to Cayo Largo? Absolutely! However, we would have a problem returning until the nude area is defined. Have no problem with the idea that there is a “clothing optional” area, however, do not agree that the “clothing optional” can stroll along the beach in front of all the resorts!
Overall rating for Sol Club Cayo Largo….EXCELLENT
