Sol Palmeras 05/25/2006
Reviewers Rating: Great
I visited the resort for my cousin's wedding in January, 2005. Being my first trip to Cuba I did not have high expectations. Some reviews I read sound very uptight and picky, and I suppose for older couples travelling expecting five star resorts they expect only the best. I, on the other hand, have not had much experience with hotels but this is what I noticed about the Sol Palmeras: - Check-In was rough, over an hour, lots of problems and lost luggage. A couple of guys from the wedding group got rooms with people already staying in them. The bride and groom didn't get the bungalow they asked for. - Great beach, beautiful clear water with no jellyfish and very nice sand. Impossible to get a lounger or an umbrella if you come after 11 am. Some topless women (one actually ruined our wedding photos by getting in the way), and a very European/Canadian resort. It had a pretty crowded beach, but the water was quite nice, very few people probably because it was so cool. Loved the beach bar, great pina coladas and lemon with rum slushies. - The room was nice, no bug problems or musty smells to worry about. Very clean room, and the maid did a great job. The water gave me some trouble. Balcony wasn't anything special but we didnt spend much time on it anyway, there are only a couple at the end with large balconies. - Food was ok. I've heard bad things about the Cuban food constantly but then again sometimes people are just too picky. Never once dined at an a-la-carte. The buffet usually did the trick for me. Didn't get sick. - Convenient with the mall and other resorts nearby, spent some time walking back and forth. - 24 hour bar was ok. Useful late at night. I wouldn't call it 24 hour though, drinks got a little non-existant around 3am. And they probably could have offered more than a couple of ham and cheese sandwiches (they ran out pretty quickly). - We took JetsGo. Enough said. - Entertainment was great, the staff was contantly getting people involved in dancing etc. At night I only caught the one show, dancers in thongs. Leave the kids back at the room. - Staff was great when we tipped. Excellent serivice and attention if you are a female. Although when a member of the wedding party lost his wallet, they refused to let him see the security cameras when it was returned to him minus 2000 pesos. They did make up for it when we had a medical emergency, very great work on the lifeguards part, we quickly got to the hospital. Other than that, it was a fantastic trip, I had a great time. The pools were nice, although I spent little time in them. Nightlife was great, I'd recommend La Rumba (they play alot of hip-hop, Cuban and dance music) but the bathrooms were a little shifty. Even if the hotel may be "old", its still very nice if you expect 4 star.
