Villa Cuba 01/25/2007
Reviewers Rating: Fair
I stayed at this hotel for one week in April 2006. Of the 5 hotels I've stayed at in Cuba, this one was the worst, hands down. It is definitely not a 4 star resort. Here's a breakdown of the following: Casas: Our first night was in a Casa. The downstairs of the casa was very nice...lots of leather furniture in the sitting rooms, gorgeous antique furniture in the dining area. However, the room was horrid. There was a foot of mould and mildew on the walls in the bathroom and in the closet area. The bathroom had no running hot water and the tiles behind the tub were BLACK with mould. Hotel Room: We were given a room in the hotel, overlooking the beach and casas. Nice room, pretty basic, but very clean. Buffet Restaurant: I found there to be very little choice in food. The buffet area is quite small, but lots of tables for eating. Bars: The huge lobby bar is very nice, but we didn't get the greatest service, and we tipped every time. It didn't seem to make a difference. At one point, a bartender yelled at us for walking away from the bar with our glasses. Apparently you can't leave the bar area with a glass...you have to request your drink in a plastic cup. Pool Bar: Great service at this bar! Great slushies too. 9th Floor Bar: Great for watching the sunset at night. 360 degree view of Varadero from the hotel. Snack bar: There's a little snack bar set up behind the pool bar during lunch hour, and you can munch on hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, etc. Quite nice, always had something good here. Pool: The pool is huge and warm. Luved it! Entertainment: The entertainment stage is set up outside beside the pool area. We enjoyed the shows, but most of them are audience participation shows where they drag unwilling participants up on stage. The dance shows are nice though! Beach: Can't go wrong with the beach in front of the Villa Cuba...gorgeous, clean, warm water. Lots of shade, lots of chairs. I think my biggest complaint is the fact that the resort was quite dead. I'm not a picky eater, and had a hard time finding anything to eat here. Also, some of the walkways are dug up, and one night (sober!) I fell into a 2 foot hole and busted my nose. This resort is okay if you are a university student on a tight budget looking for a roof over your head. It's quite run-down and in need of lots of repairs, and you can get better accommodations for less than $100 more....we paid $1250 each, and for another $85 bucks per person, we could have stayed next door at the Barcelo Solymar, which, in my opinion (stayed there 4 times...) is a better hotel. If you could get this hotel on a selloff for $800 or less, then by all means go for it, but keep in mind that you are not getting 4 star accommodations....probably closer to a 2 star.
