Hotel Reviews: The Cayman Islands
Beach Club Colony 06/20/01
Reviewers Rating: Fair
Stay - 10th-23rd Dec 2000 This hotel was ok for a three star hotel. However, we arrived a couple of days after a staff strike, which resulted in all the regular staff being sacked. They pulled in staff from the sister hotel and did their best to please us. All staff were friendly and very helpful. In the circumstances we were given a number of free jet-ski rides and a free hire car, fuel, insurance for a day. Hotel rooms were basic but functional (but it was 3 star so probably as expected). A faulty tap was repaired quickly before we had to report it. Meals were buffet style, not very Caribbean but for our 8 year old son they fitted very well. The standard of meals may have been affected by the chef being one of the staff sacked! The excellent thing was the size of beach. The hotel only has 40 rooms (and actually wasn't full). The length of beach is about 3 times the size of the next door 5 star Hyatt who had 370ish rooms! A down side is that they accept cruise ship customers and therefore the cruise ship part of the beach can become very crowded from 8ish to 2pm-ish. However the hotel reserves a large area of the beach and restaurant for it's own customers. As for Grand Cayman - it was excellent. Brilliant trips, most of which were very empty. We had a 60ft catamaran trip for a snorkel trip, with only 9 of us on the boat! Likewise the swim with stingrays,Jolly Roger pirate ship trip and submarine trip were virtually empty. Snorkelling was excellent, right on the beach, also at Cemetry Beach and Eden Rock. Try them all! All in all we thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
