The Cayman Islands
Beach Club Colony 07/10/01
Reviewers Rating: Good
Trip 7/1-7/7/01. The Beach Club Colony is a small resort, probably built in the 50's. The entire resort needs to be renovated, and the appearance was a little daunting at first. Rooms are basic, but clean. It has one open air dining room (terrace) with adjoining bar. Swimming pool is separated from the bar, and although clean, could use some repair - swim-up bar was not functional. Beach front is pretty and generous - nice snorkeling just off the beach, especially for small children. The overwhelming value of this small resort is its people. They were incredibly kind and attentive. The small size guarantees personal service from the waiters, desk personnel, etc. The grounds are safe, and the recognition factor from the staff increases safety, especially if you are bringing children. The food was excellent and plentiful. There are no "resort" activities provided, since nearly everyday the hotel hosts cruise passengers (up to 800/day!) on the beach until after lunch. Here is where you can take advantage of the added value of full privileges at the sister resort, Spanish Bay Reef, which is near the Turtle Farm. A shuttle runs twice daily. The grounds at Spanish Bay are in better shape, and have more of a resort feel. There is no shore diving from the Beach Club, but excellent shore diving from Spanish Bay (but no beach). Dives originate from either place. The dive shops were friendly, if a little less organized than optimal. However, the divemasters were exceptional, and the dives well managed. The location of the Beach Club makes shopping easy (across the street) and gives walking access to a number of other restaurants. All in all, we had a wonderful time with our three children. I don't know if we would choose Beach Club again, but the experience was far more positive than the actual appearance of the resort suggested at first.
