Hotel & Resort Reviews: Cayman Islands
Spanish Bay Reef 11/21/01
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
We travelled to the Spaninsh Bay Reef resort earlier this year. I am just getting around to posting a message. The resort was wonderfull. If you are looking for a place to get away and relax this is it. A lot of the visitors were divers, not uncommon for Grand Cayman. This meant that during the day the small resort was almost vacent. Plenty of chairs around a simple but buetifull pool. Food was good, dinner was always a romantic treat. The only disadvantage is they have a beach but you are unable to access the water due to coral.

If you are into snorkling, you could spend the whole vacation right off shore from the resort seeing such things as octopus, barracuda, angel fish, rays, stonefish and pufferfish. The resort also rented 4 wheel drive trucks for $7 for a half day. Each day we would take ourself to a different snorkling site on the island. I highly recommend Devils Grotto. The resort is so quiet you close your eyes and think you are the only person there. There is very little boat and watersport activity off shore making it even more relaxing.

The staff was always there to help. No complaints there. Each day they had a different charter or activity. The sting ray bay/coral garden tour is must, I will leave it at that.

For several years I talked to a travel agent about booking a vacation here and every year they reffered me to thier sister resort the Caribbean Beach Club on seven mile beach. We spent an afternoon there one day and I would not reccomend it. It is entirely opposite. Crowded with cruie ship passengers. The food was not as good and everyone we spoke with wished they had not listened to their travel agent and had booked the Spanish Bay Reef. The only advantage the Caribbean Beach Club had was a beutiful stretch of 7 mile beach.

Be warned however that this is a very relaxing laid back resort out by itself along the western coast. If you want bustling nightlife or lots of on site watersports this is not for you. If you want a nice small caribbean resort with a totalling relaxing atmosphere and wonderful staff book it now.
