My wife and I stayed at the Spanish Bay Reef All-Inclusive Resort in Grand Cayman from June 1-8, 2002 and loved it! If you are a SCUBA diver, then there is not a better to place to go!Things we liked:
1) Grand Cayman is a very expensive island and thus the all-inclusive is a great way to control cost. The all-inclusive includes all meals, all drinks (alcohol or not), your room, and all SCUBA diving and snorkeling from the shore. You can purchase a dive package which includes a 2-tank boat dive each day, but in our opinion that is unnecessary. The SCUBA diving from the shore is amazing! The reef is enormous and packed with wildlife. We identified over 70 different species of fish during our stay. Depths are from 35 - 100 ft with most of our diving done around 60 ft. You check out your SCUBA gear at the beginning of your stay and then anytime you want to dive you just ask for a tank of air. It's that simple! One day we travelled to Devil's Grotto (a dive site with easy caves and lots of tarpon)...you just bring your dive equipment with you and then pay $5 for a tank of air. It's so cheap!
2) Resort is clean and beautiful.
3) Staff is extremely friendly. They are always trying to make you happy. One day they had burgers for lunch (which I don't eat) so the cook went into the kitchen and found some Mahi-mahi which he grilled for me...yummy!
4) Room was spacious and nice (we had the oceanview room).
5) Jeeps are available for $6 per half day (from either 9 a.m. - noon or noon - 4:00). If available, you can pay $12 and have the jeep from 9 - 4. We never had any problem with availability.
6) A shuttle is available to transport you to the sister resort (Beach Club Colony) where there is a beautiful beach to visit.
Things we didn't like:
1) We are picky eaters (besides seafood, we don't eat meat) and so the meals were not wonderful for us due to limited variety. They did not serve tons of vegetables and fruit was available only at breakfast. Also, all are buffet style and thus aren't super fresh. None of the food was wonderful. However, many other guests said they loved the food. We ate dinner out twice (at $100 per night with no drinks...it's that expensive) and both were fantastic! If you miss the scheduled buffet times then there are no other options for food (there are no between meal snacks, etc).
2) You can't wade into the water. Although there is sand like a beach there is a 2 ft wall between the sand and the water. Also the bottom is rocks and old coral. Head to Beach Club for a day at the beach!
3) Although checking out the jeeps was nice, it was a pain to have them back by 4:00 pm each day. We don't know why they don't let you have them until later. Travel around the island is not very easy without better car access. There is a bus system that will take you up and down the west edge of the island for $2.50 per person, however it was not totally reliable. Taxis were variable in cost from $10-$25 for a 10 minute ride. If we were to return we would consider renting a car.
Overall, we would return in a minute. If you are a SCUBA diver then this is the place to be. In our opinion it is much better than Beach Club because it is more secluded and quieter. However, if you want to be more in the center of the business of 7-mile beach then you may prefer Beach Club.
