Excellent
My husband and I just got back from a five-night stay at the All-Inclusive Spanish Bay Reef Resort. Even though it was off-season, we had a wonderful time. The diving off shore is great, but it was also nice to go out for some boat dives (although a bit steep at $72.00 for two-tank dives). We took our own equipment; however, the resort equipment was exceptionally nice. The staff in the dive shop were fun and informative. The food and drink are great! The Caymans are very expensive. Two small glasses of Diet Coke were $5.00 US. Being all-inclusive, we were never hungry and could eat as much as we wanted (and drink as much too)! Breakfast was buffet most of the time with fresh fruit, omelets, home fries, breads, bacon/sausage, etc. You could order lunch that included sandwiches and salads. The ceasar salad dressing they had was outstanding! Their fish sandwich was great too. Dinner one night was Caribbean night, and they had it on the beach and were cooking jerk ribs, chicken, and fish. Another night we ordered off a menu. The remaining nights were buffet. We did go to their sister resort, the Beach Club, but were very disappointed in the service there. They were not very friendly. Lunch was just okay. However, if you like a lot of different flavored frozen drinks, get a voucher from the front desk at Spanish reef and go to the Beach Club. They had about 8 different flavors (blue raspberry, mango, key lime, strawberry, etc.), plus the standard drinks.
We rented a Suzuki Sidekick for $40 a day instead of using the jeeps at the hotel which were in abundance. We wanted to be able to drive around when we wanted to, and not when someone told us we could. It's crazy driving on the left side, though. Be prepared!
The turtle farm was a fun place to go, but once you see a couple different sizes of turtles, you've seen them all. The hatchery was destroyed in the November hurricaine, so they are rebuilding one. For $6.00, however, the turtle farm was worth it!
If you are an underwater photography fan, you have to go to Cathy Church's gallery. It is at the Sunset House downtown. Once there, you have to go through the hotel lobby to get to it. She is there to answer whatever questions you may have. The photography is absolutely beautiful.
This resort is on the northwest part of the island and is really secluded. If you want the hustle and bustle of beach life, then don't go here. On Saturday I was at the pool while my husband went for a dive, and I was the only one there all day! It was really nice. The staff is great and are ready to help you with anything. Joy at the bar will whip up a drink for you that will curl your toes! Try the Cayman lemondade...it's a winner. The margaritas aren't like you find in the states...they are a little bland. But I discovered a strawberry colada the last day we were there. Her pina coladas are great too, but the strawberry was superb! She is a joy to be around and fun to talk to.
Now, about the rooms. We had a standard room with two full-size beds. It was your typical "hotel room" with a tile floor. We will definitely spend the extra money for an ocean villa next time. (Yes, if we have a chance we will be back). Probably the thing we disliked the most were the sugar ants in our room. If you have any food, you have to protect it by either hanging it or putting it in something that is surrounded by water! It was more annoying than anything...but when you are on an island, you have to expect that.
We highly recommend the Spanish Bay Reef Resort!
