My husband and I enjoyed our honeymoon at the Spanish Bay Reef Resort on the northern tip of Grand Cayman. The island was absolutely beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed all of the avavilable activities as well as just doing nothing. The hotel grounds were clean and reasonably maintained.Spanish Bay Reef is a good value for travel to Grand Cayman, but "all-inclusive resort" is somewhat misleading. I would not recommend this property for someone looking for "Beaches" or "Sandals"! All of your meals and non-premium drinks are included, but do not expect a wide variety of choices or overly attentive service. It was not uncommon to sit at the poolside bar in the afternon and wait more than 15-20 minutes to be offered a drink.
Our room was spacious and clean. The only downside was that the maid service was inconsistent. I would have preferred that our room be cleaned in the morning while we were off on excursions rather than in the late afternoon when we had already returned and wanted to clean up for dinner.
The property is in a beautiful location for relaxing. We often enjoyed evening walks on the beach and there were numerous hammocks to lounge in. If we were to return again, I would look in to renting a vehicle for easier access to town. The "Jeeps" that the hotel offers are not always available and are definitely not reliable. We had one break down after driving through a puddle and had to walk back to the hotel; they still charged us the fuel fee! The bikes are great for local trips (to Hell, etc.), but I wouldn't plan on taking one much further.
We really liked the idea of having exchange priviledges with the Beach Club, but unfortunately these were very limited. The shuttles were infrequent and if there were cruise ships in port, your exchange priviledges could get "bumped". When you did get there, you were only allowed to eat lunch (if you had a voucher) and you were only allowed two drinks.
I was a bit disappointed with some of the claims on their web site. There was no nightly entertainment other than watching guests sneek behind the bar to make drinks when the bartender was MIA. If you're a TV addict, beware! The satellite TV gets the Cayman Tourist channel and about 4 other stations at best. As honeymooners, we did get a bottle of champagne at dinner one evening, but there was no upgrade to an available waterview room.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Spanish Bay Reef, but would only recommend it to our more adventurous friends and family. It is a beautiful place with (mostly) friendly staff, but keep in mind- You get what you pay for...
