Dominica Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews Reviews
Layou River "Hotel" 10/04/2004
Reviewers Rating: Fair
This past summer, I got married in Dominica. Almost our entire wedding party was booked into this "hotel." We found quickly that it is not a hotel at all, in the accepted sense. There was bat guano on the walls, the plumbing was not working, there were cockroaches in some of the rooms and the air conditioning was very inconsistent. The proprietors had opened the hotel just for us. It is a beautiful setting, but that was all it had to offer. Well, the Dominican staff were very friendly as well. The proprietors are dishonest people. They overcharged some of the guests. They also tried to charge my husband and me for nights we were not even on the island, because our bags were in one of the rooms and they said they had had to turn people away. Clearly, this was a falsehood, as the hotel had not been open before we arrived and there was no plumbing. I said that they ought to have told us that this would be their policy; we would simply have stored our bags elsewhere. In addition, they tacked on quite high service fees to all meals, and we discovered that they pocket the money and do not pass any of it on to the servers. Also, we had brought in our own decorations for the rooms and several parties--silk lanterns from Asia, hand-painted Chinese scrolls, hand-made masks--and they stole them, quite baldly. They actually took boxes of our things and hid them away. Thankfully, this was not our first trip to the island. But it was for the 50 guests we had. Allowing the above-referenced location to advertise itself as a hotel can only harm Dominican tourism: people staying there will have a distorted view of Dominica. I believe in Dominica's beauty and hospitality. These people do much to discredit that.
