Hotel Reviews: Dominican Republic
Allegro Jack Tar Village 8/18/00
Reviewers Rating: Good
The Jack Tar Resort is an adults only resort with beach front access (separated by a path through the golf course), situated along the Playa Dorada Beach. It is a clean beach with nice sand. The all-inclusive resort watersports are deceptive as you may only use them for a 1/2 hour per day and it is suggested you pay extra insurance to borrow them in case of loss or damage. Snorkeling at this resort is next to impossible as the waves are quite strong. The Jack Tar Resort was rated a 4 star by our travel agent, but we were disappointed and do not feel it was a 4 star resort. We feel this way because our room was a bit dirty, towels were scarce, and during our stay the hotel fumigated our room and left the dead insects behind! Although the resort has 4 dinner restaurants, only 2 are open per night (buffet and 1 a la carte) and you are only allowed to reserve 2 of the 3 a la carte per stay. Moreover, the buffet restaurant has difficulty keeping fruit flies out of the salads and desserts and I had the unfortunate experience of having maggots in my vegetables one night at an a la carte restaurant. That said, there is a wide variety of food offered at the buffet restaurant. The bar staff seemed understaffed, yet friendly, however drinks like daquiris were not slushy but more liquid. The pools were nice and resort activities were endless. All in all, we feel our trip was an affordable get-away, but don't expect a 4 star resort like we did.
