Gran Ventana 04/24/01

My husband, 12 year old daughter, and I just returned from the Gran ventana Beach Resort in Puerta Plata. We have vacationed three previous years, at three different resorts. The Gran Ventana is the newest of the resorts we have visited. It is definitely the most beautiful. It is a large resort, so if you do not like a lot of people, noise and children, this is not the resort to visit.
I was disappointed in the staff; in the other resorts--Paradise Beach Club and Jack Tar--the staff was incredible. At Gran Ventana they were not very friendly. The "Fun team" was not visible, the restaurant staff was accomodating, but not friendly. The food was equal to the other resorts. The three sit-down restaurants were very nice. We seemed to enjoy the Italian the best; the Ocean Grill was great--have the sea bass--but we were asked to leave our table at 8:10, and we had only a 7:00 reservation.
The weather was perfect the entire week we were there. I don't think I would travel over Easter again--the resort filled to capacity. Some friends who were with us went on the Jeep Safari trip and absolutely loved it.
My only complaint would be the pool chair situation. It was unbelievable. I think some people slept next to the pool so that they could have a lounge chair the next day. Yes, people do place towels on the chairs and then spend the day at the beach. In fact, we had an unpleasant run-in with a couple over their chairs and towel situation. They thought we had stolen their towels; it was resolved and I didn't charge them babysitting service while they were at the beach for six hours with towels covering the lounge chairs! We later witnessed this woman complaining about other trivialities during her vacation, so I think it was just her nature. Fortunately, we had a stress-free enjoyable week and I would recommend this resort.
